GHG Management

Since 2013, the Xinying Plant of GMTC has been conducting greenhouse gas (GHG) emission quantification and reporting based on the ISO 14064-1: 2006 guidelines for organizational-level GHG emissions reduction and removal, with the plant's process area as GHG inventory boundary. In 2023, the Taiwan plant adopted the updated ISO 14064-1: 2018 standard for GHG inventory and was verified by AFNOR. The inventory scope includes category 1 direct GHG emissions, category 2 indirect GHG emissions from imported energy, category 3 upstream transportation/distribution emissions, downstream transportation/distribution emissions, employee commuting emissions, category 4 upstream emissions from purchased goods, emissions from disposal of solid and liquid waste, and category 5 downstream leased asset emissions. The detailed emissions status for each category is listed in the table below:

The total GHG emissions from the major processes in 2023 were 191,930 metric tons CO2e, with Scope 1 (direct emissions) accounting for 49.99% and Scope 2 (indirect emissions) accounting for 50.01%. The GHG emissions intensity was 2.33 metric tons CO2e per ton of output, an increase of 9% from the previous year. In the second quarter of 2023, fuel Oil furnace were eliminated, the thermal process was simplified, and old equipment was replaced with high-efficiency equipment. In addition, the change in the product portfolio led to a decrease in production in 2023 but an increase in emissions intensity.

Carbon Emissions Pathways

It is anticipated that the initial carbon emissions will increase following the commissioning of the new 50ton EAF. To fulfill corporate social responsibility, we will continue to implement carbon reduction measures during this period (such as process optimization, equipment improvements, and renewable energy usage). We will also closely monitor the development of new technologies, and stay informed on international trends and government policies. This approach allows for ongoing adjustments and enhancements to our carbon emissions pathways. The goal is to reduce carbon emissions by 45% compared to the projected Business As Usual (BAU) levels by 2030, with a long-term commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
