Waste and Pollutant Management

Waste

In accordance with the "Waste Disposal Act", GMTC’s disposal of waste generated from the manufacturing process is entrusted to a qualified waste management company approved by the competent authority, while the Company has signed contracts with waste disposal companies. In addition, both parties have fulfilled contract specifications. In 2023, the total amount of industrial waste commissioned by GMTC was about 48,476 metric tons (non-hazardous waste accounted for 96% and hazardous waste accounted for 4%). The main treatment method is reused for subsequent processing, so that waste can be recycled and the impact on the environment can be reduced.

This year, we promoted the recycling of waste bricks, and the recycling rate of waste bricks is 93%, an increase of about 10% from 83% last year. In addition, due to the fact that reducing slag was temporarily stored on-site for larger-scale off-site recovery operations in 2023, the waste intensity in 2023 was 0.59, a 70% increase compared to 0.34 in 2022. GMTC formulated resource recycling procedures, and has set up resource recycling centers in its plants and offices to implement resource recycling and garbage classification to advocate correct environmental protection concepts to employees. The supplier's packaging materials, including iron drums and space bags, will be reused in the plant if appropriate, but must be scrapped after they are deemed no longer usable.

Air Pollutant

Air pollutants that may be emitted during the GMTC’s production process include particulate pollutants, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds. All types of air pollutants are analyzed and reported in accordance with the regulations of the competent authority to control pollutant emissions, and to understand the situation of pollutants and comply with environmental regulations and standards. For analysis of exhaust pipes, we have appointed the environmental analysis and testing organizations, approved by the Environmental Protection Administration of the Executive Yuan, to conduct an analysis and testing of exhaust pipes on a regular basis in accordance with the "Regulations of Regular Self-Analysis or by Commission and Reporting Management for Stationary Pollution Sources", and report to the competent authority in accordance with relevant regulations. In 2023, the analysis and testing results of air pollutants from exhaust pipes are in compliance with the "Stationary Pollution Source Air Pollutant Emissions Standards" announced by the Environmental Protection Administration of the Executive Yuan. For each process, filter bags are cleaned and replaced according to the content of the permit. Sampling facilities are inspected and maintained annually in accordance with regulatory requirements.

The Liuying Plant is located in Liuying Science and Technology Industrial Park and Environmental Protection Technology Park. As there is no EAF steelmaking processes among the production processes in the area as promised by Liuying industrial park's EIA, Liuying Plant has conducted its own EIA for this reason. In addition to complying with the amount of pollutants emited by its own environmental assessment, Liuying Plant is also subject to the cap of pollutants imposed by Liuying Industrial Park. For 2023, it met the commitments in the environmental impact assessment.
