S5 is mainly developed for shock-resisting parts where good ductility and hardness are needed. S5 is mainly developed for shock-resisting parts where good ductility and hardness are needed. The carbon tool steel with a hardness lower than Rockwell C-60 does not has the same shock resistance as that of the alloy grade. The complex parts made of S2 are usually oil-quenched. Although water quenching has the proper effects, cracks may occur if parts have sharp cross-sectional variation or sharp corners.
